Hahnemann considered his work on the chronic diseases - his chronic miasms - to be his greatest contribution to medicine. Yet he predicted the homeopathic community would be slow to appreciate and to successfully apply his work in this area. In an 1827 letter to his colleague Stapf, he suggested " least a year will elapse before the others get my book; they will then require more than six months to recover from the shock and astonishment at the monstrous and unheard things, perhaps another six months before they believe in it ... Hence three years from now will elapse before they can do anything useful with it.”

As much as I'm reluctant to call Hahnemann out, here is one instance where I'll insist he was wrong - his figures fall at least 186 years off the mark. Nowhere in the literature of homeopathy do we find as much confusion and misappropriation of Hahnemann's teachings, as we do in discussion of the nature of chronic disease.

  • carefully explore Hahnemann's descriptions of the chronic miasmatic diseases, tying these into contemporary understandings and classifications of disease;
  • expose and discuss commonly held myths and misconceptions regarding Hahnemann's teachings;
  • investigate how our historical and contemporary authors and teachers have represented these ideas, or have re-invented them to incorporate their own philosophies of health & disease;
  • outline contemporary teachings regarding the chronic miasms, linking these to the traditional literature;
  • but most importantly -
    provide practical examples, in weekly casework and clinical scenarios, of how an understanding of the nature of chronic disease can provide practical tools in daily clinical practice

I've taught extensively on this topic previously online & in person; this course will build on those experiences and introduce new case material & expanded perspectives, including newly-developed "maps" of the pathologies of the chronic diseases.

You have a well-taken (received) case on one hand, and some faithfully-acquired knowledge of our remedies in your head, a pile of resources (materia medica texts, a repertory or two (or a feature-rich piece of homeopathic software) on the other.  How to proceed?  Will will lean on his years of clinical and teaching experience to help chart a path through the process of organizing and analyzing homeopathic cases - both acute and chronic - to assure optimal success in treatment.

We'll examine a variety of approaches using cases - both acute and chronic - from Will's casebooks and from the historical literature to develop skills that you can transfer productively to cases in your own practice.

Topics will include:

Understanding and completing the symptom; both in the process of case-receiving and afterwards, appreciating the contribution that individual expressions (signs, symptoms) make to the case as a whole.  Appreciating when a symptom is sufficiently "complete" and how to proceed when it is not.

Appreciating the Totality; understanding the nature of the "totality of symptoms," as so much more than a mere collection of "stuff that is true about the case".  How to recognize when a Totality is sufficiently "complete," and how to proceed when it is not.

Approaches to organizing/structuring a meaningful totality - we'll closely examine a variety of approaches that can be applied to cases of varied nature.

Moving from the Totality to an analysis; use of the Repertory.

The role of Keynotes, "Essences," perceived "core delusions" and "vital sensations" in case analysis.

The relative roles of mental/emotional, somatic (physical), local, and general expressions in the Totality.

The significance of "symptoms of the person" vs. "symptoms of the disease"

Working with "one-sided" or "defective" cases.

How our appreciation of the nature of chronic "miasmatic" disease can productively be applied in case analysis.

Constructing, and extracting useful guidance from, a meaningful repertorization.

Perceiving, and proceeding with, cases in which the principal issues are "maintained," rather than dynamic; "obstacles to cure."

Registrants will be able participate in the webinar live sessions, or to participate asynchronously via streaming video recordings of the live sessions at their own pace*.

4 elements & the Hippocratic humors in Materia Medica study & Case Analysis

6 weekly 2-hour live sessions, Wednesday evenings Feb. 11 - March 18, 2015, 5-7pm US Pacific time

All sessions will be recorded and available online for review or self-paced participation for the duration of your 6-month course enrollment.

Participation to be assessed by online quiz completion following each session, and 12 hours of continuing education credit will be offered for completion of the course, as a downloadable certificate and Mozilla badge.

The Hippocratic humors - based on the 4-elements cosmology of the Greek philosopher Empedocles - were introduced as a literal explanation of pathophysiology in 4th-century BC Hippocratic dogmatic medicine, and remained central to pathophysiologic explanations through the 2nd-century Greco-Roman medicine of Galen, and the golden age of Islamic medicine, persisting through the rebirth of European medicine in the European Renaissance well into the 18th century period of enlightenment; informing the "old-school" medicine of Hahnemann's day.  We will investigate how these concepts, applied literally, shaped the medicine out of which homeopathy emerged; and taken as a metaphorical map rather than as literal explanatory principals, how we can use these concepts to organize our contemporary appreciation of disease and the properties of our remedial substances.

Topics to be covered:

Historical origins of 4-elements cosmology and Hippocratic humoral theory in Greco-Roman and Arabic medicine, and its elaboration in the "old-school" 18th-century European medicine of Hahnemann's day; which will help us to appreciate the use of 4-elements and humoral terminology & concepts in our classical literature.

The use of the Mappa Mundi - a visual depiction of Hippocratic elemental and humoral balance - as a useful graphic "map" or model for organizing symptomatology in the study of our homeopathic Materia Medica, and in the organization of cases under analysis;  with examples provided in the study of several well-known and several "smaller" remedies, and a number of example cases.

Understanding & Working with Infectious & Epidemic Diseases of Childhood

Join Will for an exploration of common infectious and epidemic diseases of childhood - some identified by their known etiologic agents, and some known more as clinical syndromes.  We'll look at descriptions of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV); Croup; Bronchiolitis; Infectious Diarrheas including Rotoviral Diarrhea; Chickenpox; Pertussis (Whooping Cough); Measles; Mumps; group A beta-hemolytic strep infections and their sequellae including scarlet fever and rheumatic fever; and largely for historical purposes, at smallpox, diphtheria and polio. We'll address homeopathic management, including acute treatment and short-term homeoprophylaxis, conventional management including immunization/vaccination, and will address those historical and contemporary interventions which have contributed & may continue to contribute to reductions in morbidity & mortality of these diseases.

Note - this course is intended for the serious practitioner or student of homeopathy (at any level of study).  It is not intended to be a forum to debate the legitamacy of homeopathy as a medical discipline (tho we will discuss interventions from an evidence-based perpective), and should not be considered to substitute for a personal relationship or direct conversations with a health-care provider. Participants who disrupt the operation of this course with personal agendas conflicting with the intended goals will be dismissed at the instructor's discretion, with or without prior discussion and with or without reimbursement of the registration fee.
